Shark Cage Diving Experience

So I was doing some monetization on some of my, very few, YouTube videos and although this video should have been a no-brainer for belonging to me, YouTube said that I wasn’t allowed to use the music on it. I ended up remaking the video, which also give me the opportunity to write a little something about it on Behind the Scenes.

My shark cage diving experience during my short vacation to the Western Cape March 2014. It was quite an unexpected little adventure as I could have done some shark cage diving in my own back yard on the South Coast. The do however say that Kleinbaai (Van Dyk’s Bay) is the Great white shark capital of the world.

After a quick local booking at White Shark (Eco)Ventures sommer at the launching site, apart from the unpredictable weather conditions, I was set. You can see my video about the venture below:

When you do some research you’ll find Dyer Island, a small, about 20 ha, now protected island just off the shores of Uilkraalsmond. Dyer Island is the breading ground of some very rare South African birds including the African Penguins and a few other species. The only access point to the island is per boat from Kleinbaai. Geyser Rock is a smaller island nearby homing tens of thousands of Cape fur seals. Yummy if you’re a Great white shark!

The shallow strip of sea between the two islands is called “Shark Alley”!

The Great white shark, also known as the great white, can actually be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans. They are known for their viciousness and size (growing up to 6.4 m in length). Great white sharks are also responsible for by far the largest number of recorded shark attacks on humans.

Apart from the crew member, I was the only South African on board, which was a bit odd. White Shark Safaris, which I suppose is one of the booking agents for the event, did a good job getting some Americans, Italians and Germans on the same boat.

Oh, and the last guy getting on the boat, never got into the sea at all that day. Seems like his dancing made him a bit sea sick.
